+1
This design is spectacular! You most certainly know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
what happened? this thing hasn’t been updated in a year.
Yeah I know where has the time gone? You know my real reason for going on the Road To Sturgis run last year was to scout and look for support for a film I am planning to shoot. It was not to join the Hoka Hey. In fact I had never heard of the Hoka Hey until I got involved with Gina (Open Road Radio) and her friend…. I forget his name at the moment. I certainly didn’t plan to go on the HH in advance. I just followed the guy to Florida as a curiosity really. Until Jon Compton approached me and asked me to work for them; I never considered going with them. But he said he worked for Discovery Channel. He asked for my resume and said they would pay me my rate. I’m a 1st AD and sometimes a production manager so this was a no brainer for me. I’ve segment produced so my skills were applicable to the project and I figured I was headed back to the west coast so I would work a project and get paid all the way home.
It was about midnight when I made the deal, we left at 7am but Jon Compton assured me I would be faxed my contract and paperwork on the road. When my bike broke I called him to say I would not be working for him. He hired me to shoot the riders from my bike so… But he asked me to fly to the next stop and I would be reimbursed for my ticket and put on another bike owned by Durham. OK, no problem. I left my bike to be fixed and flew to Alabama where Jon and one of the guys picked me up and continued down to the next checkin. We arrived at say 1am, riders were checking in. I continued to shoot using my camera and theirs. Later in the morning they took me to a rent a car place and we rented a car. I was told I’d have to wait until we got back in So. Dakota to get a bike. We drove the actual mapped route to Cheyenne. I asked Jon if he had gotten a faxed contract because he should have gotten one at the last dealership. They were privy to an office there but he said No because things were moving too fast. I asked him to put me on the line with his production manager for the project the next day. Later in the day he called someone who was in Florida and put me on the phone with him. The man said he was the actual Ex. Producer for the project. Great! I asked him about my contract, he asked me about my background. I told him I had started as a union grip working at Paramount, in all those years I had worked on many many films, but as far as live stuff; I had segment produced for Valley Cable TV Larry Namers first cable production group, I had worked on the Shoah Project for Spielberg and that I had worked production my entire life. He asked me if I thought his coverage was good. I said NO. I could not understand why they only had camera ops at the check in’s and not on the road with the riders. It would seem to me this would have been the best footage to capture. He said he had three crews on the road.
I asked him about his background.
Let me preface this part. When I’m at home in Los Angeles and I’m talking to another crew member, it’s only natural to talk about the projects we have done. And because we have worked crew for so many years we understand the title and positional hierarchy. If you are an AC, AD, PM, Stand By Painter, Greensman or Bestboy. I know what you’re talking about. I know what you do. AND very importantly if you say I worked for Castlerock or Dreamworks I am not going to think you are bragging because those companies hire hundreds of below the line people every year. It is just a business. In fact lot-rats and below- he-line crew are so unaffected by all the “National Enquirer” rhetoric that you might as well be speaking jibberish. Who’s partying with who is important for actors but the rest of us who work a 6am to 9pm job are not affected by it. We are for the most part NOT fans while we are working. So when we talk to a FAN instead of a business man, we pick up on it real fast.
OK back to the story. This guy told me he had worked for who’s who. I asked him what he did. But he kept giving me a laundry list of famous people. So I asked directly what he does at The Discovery Channel? Who is producing this pilot that I found myself on now? Well holy shit! All I could gather from him was that at somepoint he had worked at a Disney Theme Park in the animatronics department and he had had conversations with a few guys who actually work for Discovery but that this was NOT a Discovery project and he after leaving the theme park had created his own production company. And that this was a speck project at best.
And here I was headed to Cheyenne Wyoming, my bike was in Florida, my backpack, and gear from my road trip was in a truck headed to Alaska because they put all my gear in John Durhams truck and this chain smoking bozo sitting next to me had out right lied about who they were and what was going on.
If you have ever seen me angry you understand what this little troll Jon Compton went through for the next few hours. He is a good talker and so full of crap he could build a shit house with a few licks of his tongue but he had nothing on me that day. I was hoping my stuff would end up in Cheyenne so I could grab it, fly back to Florida, retrieve my motorcycle and deal with the law suit when I returned to Los Angeles. Unfortunately after days in Cheyenne I realized that my stuff, my footage, my extra cameras all my travel things from the “Road to Sturgis” trip was not coming to Cheyenne. James Durham who had not ridden the route was not stopping in Cheyenne and I may have to go to Alaska to retrieve my things.
I of course did not stop shooting or interviewing people. I did my job because it’s what I do. I had made a few connections with some of the riders and I was invested in them to a point. Beyond the scumbag I was riding with I wondered if Durham had any idea that this group of “Discovery” people were just conartists. I get dreamers. We all start out with a dream and I get that they want to shoot it for some reason but Jesus Christ don’t lie about it. Don’t hire people you never really plan to hire in the first place. My plan was to send my stuff home UPS if it was in So. Dakota or leave it with family there and return to Florida for my motorcycle.
Once I arrived in So. Dakota and learned one of the riders had died; I started to change my mind. I was one of the first people to hear about it because the wife of the man who was killed made the phone call to the rider I was interviewing during the interview. He asked me to turn off my camera as he got the call. After he hung up he told me that his riding buddy had been killed and that was the wife of the man. It was heart breaking. I’ve been a rider my whole life and for the number of guys who say “Yeah if I get killed at least I’ll go doing something I love!” to them I say “Yes but don’t for get that the women you love will still be heartbroken for the rest of their lives, so please take care and ride safely.”
After we arrived at Pine Ridge Reservation and met with Chief Oliver Red Cloud, I decided to stay the course because he asked me to. We had a private conversation and I was enlightened.
More later… gotta go to work!
